AT&T Shies Away from Adult Chat Unit
From XBIZ

LOS ANGELES – In its acquisition last November of privately held pay-per-call, search and directory solutions provider Ingenio, AT&T received an unwanted bonus; control of the NiteFlirt phone sex and Keen psychic hotline services.

“Ingenio’s technology and products deliver an innovative approach for lead generation and help advertisers efficiently place themselves in front of consumers who are ready to act,” Mark Britto, president and CEO of Ingenio, said. “Combining Ingenio’s capabilities with AT&T’s resources and YellowPages.com’s strong reach and brand is great news for advertisers and creates a foundation to expand this business.”

One area of its business that may not see any expansion is its adult offerings.

According to an AT&T spokesperson, however, the company is not interested in adult operations.

“We are acquiring the pay-per-call and earn-per-call portions, but we are not acquiring the adult portion because it is simply not consistent with our brand,” the spokesperson said.

The Ingenio acquisition was intended as a means to bolster online productivity for traditional print-based Yellow Pages advertisers who may not have their own website, by implementing unique phone numbers for advertisers that allow for efficacy tracking and performance-based pay-per-call billing.

“As advertisers add performance-based advertising to their marketing mix, this investment makes sense for our business,” Ray Wilkins, AT&T group president for diversified business said. “Ingenio’s technology will allow AT&T to expand our robust service portfolio for print, online and mobile advertisers, and that will further differentiate us from our competitors.”

AT&T also expanded its mobile search offerings to include a new online application for iPhone users; along with downloadable, localized search tools that will incorporate the company’s Yellow Pages listings.

Convenience touted as platform’s greatest advantage.

HAMPSHIRE, England – The mobile adult content market will reach $3.5 billion by 2010, according to a Juniper Research study released Tuesday.

According to the report, the largest share of revenue (45 percent) currently comes from Western Europe and North America.

“This region will continue to be the largest contributor to overall revenues throughout the forecast period, with revenues from this region rising to $1.5 billion by 2012,” the report states. “However, the region’s contribution to overall revenues declines to 33 percent by the end of the forecast period, due partly to a marked increase in contribution from North America.”

The report also names convenience as the greatest advantage of the mobile platform.

“The most convincing and inherent advantage of the mobile platform is in the fact that it allows access to value-added adult data services virtually anywhere and anytime,” the report states. “A mobile user has immediate access to his or her mobile for most part of the day.”

The study also covered the hurdles that must be overcome before such services can be delivered in ways that maximize their revenue-earning potential. Regulatory constraints, the public’s reservations about adult content, network speed and coverage, and age verification are among the issues pointed out.

The study of the mobile adult services industry was conducted through 30 profiles with leading players in the industry, one-on-one interviews and an analysis of pricing models and marketing distribution. The report divides the market into four main categories and provides forecast data on text-based services, downloads, subscription-based services and video chatting.

Visit Juniper Research’s website for more details about the report, which includes the downloadable white paper, “Adult Content in the Palm of Your Hand.”

The white paper is an extract from the fourth edition of “Mobile Adult, Subscriptions, Downloads, Video Chat & Text-Based Services, 2007-2012.” (Fourth Edition).

“This fourth-edition report is an essential tool for strategic and market planners focusing on market sizing, forecasting, player analysis and positioning strategies associated with current and future opportunities in mobile adult services market from 2007 to 2012,” said John Levett of Juniper Research. “The study provides operators, aggregators and service providers with practical five-year forecast data and also offers strategic recommendations for all members of the mobile adult service chain.”

Very strict guidelines set for mobile pictures, video, music by wireless carriers

I an article posting via AVN, very strict guidelines are set for content providers of mobile pictures, video, music and more by various wireless carriers.

It appears that for both consumers and adult content providers, the choice of wireless carrier can have a huge impact upon the amount of hardcore content being available. At least as according to the guidelines that were established today. I expect that these guidelines will certainly be reexamined and adjusted later. For now it seems that a fully clothed men with larger than the average package (as determined by who?), will not be downloadable from Verizon. Femal nudes may be permissable however; thier category: “Medium Shot Rear Nude — Female,” which allows the photo if the legs are not up or apart… So nudes may be downloaded and sold through Verizon? I am not sure at this time, but the outlook appears to be best for Virgin Mobile, who is taking a more lenient approach to censoring the adult content …

From Podcasting News:

Sony has introduced an update for the PlayStation Portable, version 2.70, that adds support for downloading podcasts to the device for playing offline. Previously, the PSP only supported streaming media content.

It appears that Sony is avoiding use of the term podcast, though. In their information, podcasts are called “RSS Channels.”

The update lets PSP users save audio podcasts from an RSS Channel (podcast feed) onto Memory Stick Duo media. Version 2.70 also adds support for Macromedia Flash Player 6 content.

The PSP now supports saving podcasts three ways:

* Select only 1 item to save – Select the item that you want to save, and then select [Save] in the options menu.
* Save items within a channel – Select the channel that contains the content you want to save, and then select [Save] in the options menu.
* Select multiple channels and save items within those channels – Select the channels, and then select [Save Multiple] in the options menu.

A sample podcast and tutorial is available at the PlayStation site.

The update is for customers who own PSP (PlayStation Portable) system model number PSP-1001 sold in North America. The update is a free download from the Playstation site.

Mobile Phones Revolutionize Webbrowsing, Study Says

By Steve Javors

From XBiz

PARIS, France — According to the annual study by Ipsos Insight called “The Face of the Web,” mobile phone browsing is globally revolutionizing the way people view the Internet. The boom of cheap mobile phones, coupled with faster wireless networks has fueled its growth.

The study was conducted in November and December 2005 among 6,544 adults in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, the U.K. and the U.S.

“Accessing the Internet on a wireless handheld device is no longer a novelty for consumers in the major global economies,” Brian Cruikshank, senior Vice President and managing director for Ipsos said. “In the long term, many of today’s PC-centric online activities could be complemented through the mobile phone or migrate to the mobile phone altogether, due to great convenience and faster connection speeds.”

Twenty-eight percent of mobile phone owners have browsed the Internet on their cellphones according to the study. While that’s only a 3 percent increase from 2004, the study says that people over 35 are fueling the growth.

The study also showed that text messaging was the most popular online activity, used by more than half of all mobile phone households. More than one-third have sent or received emails as well, but personal computers still remain the device of choice to access the Internet.

In a related study, researchers Maryam Kamvar and Shumeet Baluja looked at 1 million search queries made to Google mobile and arrived at some surprising conclusions. According to the pair, searches for porn on cellphones exceeded similar PC-based searches by percentage. Based on the study, 20 percent of the searches on cellphones were for porn, whereas only 10 percent of PC searches sought the same material.

“We speculate that people may feel more comfortable querying adult terms on private [mobile] devices,” the study suggested. “Anecdotally, we have observed that users often consider their cellphone as a very personal and private device; perhaps even more so than their computer — the probability of others discovering their search behavior (through cached pages, auto-completion of query terms or URLs) is smaller.”

Study: Porn Scores Big With Cellphone Users
By Michael Hayes
From XBiz

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Whether porn crosses the mobile divide has always been a question of human behavior rather than technology. A recent study by two computer science professors affiliated with Google suggests that users could be more likely to search for porn on their mobile phones than on PCs or PDAs.

Maryam Kamvar and Shumeet Baluja looked at 1 million search queries made to Google mobile. Dividing the queries into those made at Google’s XHTML and the company’s PDA site, the researchers came up with some surprising results.

One of the team’s more unanticipated findings was that searches for porn on cellphones exceeded similar PC-based searches by percentage. According to the study, 20 percent of the searches on cellphones were for porn, whereas only 10 percent of PC searches sought the same material.

The gap means that mobile porn is bucking the overall trend for online porn searches. According to the study, the total number of porn searches has dropped 50 percent since 1997 due mostly to the fact that additional users come online daily and don’t search for porn. By contrast, mobile doesn’t suffer from the same drop-off rate.

While the study notes that the disparity, given the smaller screen size and quality of mobile, seems counterintuitive, the researchers pose an interesting hypothesis.

“We speculate that people may feel more comfortable querying adult terms on private devices,” the study suggested. “Anecdotally, we have observed that users often consider their cellphone as a very personal and private device; perhaps even more so than their computer — the probability of others discovering their search behavior (through cached pages, auto-completion of query terms or URLs) is smaller.”

Translation: quality has nothing on privacy.

But privacy alone doesn’t account for demand for mobile porn, according to the study. Youth is another factor.

The researchers noted that PDA searches for porn only accounted for five percent of all searches. The study chalked up the difference between PDAs and cellphones to the fact that PDAs are more popular with businessmen, whereas cellphones are common mobile devices for teenagers.

While the findings of the Google study present a possible treasure trove of data to porn companies looking to launch mobile platforms, industry predictions on mobile porn still remain mixed.

“There’s a lot of hype about it, but it’s not likely to be all that big a revenue source,” Bengt Nordstrom, VP at inCode Wireless, said. “If you go to the magazine rack in a bookstore, there’ll be a certain shelf for adult magazines, but it’s a small percentage of all the magazines for sale. It’ll be the same for mobile content. It’s difficult to believe that it’s a must-have for operators.”

FriendFinder, Streamray Go Mobile
By Michael Hayes from Xbiz News

As the adult entertainment industry pioneers the new frontier of mobile, FriendFinder and Streamray are looking to connect on every conceivable platform with the launch of a new proprietary application.

FriendFinder and Streamray, which merged this time last year, already have a mobile presence, but the currently unnamed proprietary application will boost that presence by making mobile versions of FriendFinder and Streamray available to nearly all users.

“Different carriers have different protocols,” Legendary Lars, marketing director for FriendFinder, said. “With this new application we should be able to reach any platform created in the last three years; that’s excellent.”

Both companies see big potential in the mobile market. According to Lars, the expectation is to reach approximately 10 percent of customers in a mobile setting. That number should yield profits in the neighborhood of $1 million for the first year. But at present, the product is not aimed at reaching new customers via mobile.

“Only the cam sites are expected to draw in new customers,” Lars told XBiz. “We’re working on applications to make cam to cam work over the phone.”

To develop the new mobile applications, FriendFinder and Streamray brought on Harvey Kaplan, who helped AEBN launch its Xobile division.

“Harvey is our champ for mobile,” Lars said. “He’s going to help us make this happen very soon.”

According to Kaplan, the choice to join FriendFinder and Streamray was easy.

“My goal at AEBN was to help establish them as a recognized leader in mobile; that’s what I intend to do here [FriendFinder and Streamray],” Kaplan told XBiz. “They’re a great company with a great reputation.”

According to Kaplan, the application will be ready by the Internext show in Florida this August.

“The challenge with these ventures isn’t building the software,” Kaplan said. “The hard part is adding to the user’s habits. We know that we can show them that their mobile experience can mirror the PC; it’s about adaptation.”
